Indradyumna Swami Takes Toronto by Storm!

This past weekend, devotees at ISKCON Toronto got a flavour of what it must be like to chant, dance and joyfully take part in the annual festivals which HH Indradyumna Swami is famous for!  Like a spiritual tornado, Indradyumna Swami and HG Sri Prahlad das flew into Toronto and brought amazing kirtan, electric discourses and an atmosphere of jubilance!

It all began on Friday, February 20th, when Maharaj and Sri Prahlad das arrived at the temple where devotees greeted them with kirtan and garlands.  Maharaj was then brought upstairs to Srila Prabhupada's Quarters where he met his dear godbrother, HH Bhaktimarga Swami.  After a nice foot-bathing ceremony, a traditional way to greet renunciate monks, Maharaj and Sri Prahlad das settled into their accomodations at the temple as they rested before a scheduled home program in the evening.

Visnu Hari das and his family welcomed Maharaj for a packed home program that evening where the assembled devotees got their first taste of the incredible kirtans of Maharaj and Sri Prahlad das!  A mouth-watering Ekadasi feast awaited everyone at the end of the memorable evening.

The next day, morning Bhagavatam class was given by Sri Prahlad das and the day was off to a busy start!  In the afternoon, about 40 youth of ISKCON Toronto met with both Indradyumna Swami and Bhaktimarga Swami.  It was a very personal class that was given and the focus was placed on the importance of chanting and doing daily mantra meditation.  The mood was very spritually intense at times and light-hearted at other moments!

As the evening approached, devotees trickled into the temple as a sudden mini-snowstorm slowed the city down.  However, by the time things got rolling, the temple room was full and Maharaj led an absolutely incredible kirtan for over an hour that had everyone dancing.  As everyone collectively caught their breath after dancing like crazy, Maharaj showed one of his DVD presentations about the annual Woodstock festival in Poland!

Sunday morning started with another inspiring Bhagavatam class and continued with a visit to ISKCON Brampton where devotees eagerly awaited Maharaj and Sri Prahlad das for their weekly afternoon Sunday Feast.

Then came the big show!

Sunday evening marked celebrations at ISKCON Toronto for Siva-Ratri and there was a certain noticeable buzz in the air!  It all began before the Sunday Feast as two wonderful local devotees, Braja Vilasa das and Raga Manjari dasi received second initiation from Maharaj.  After the fire sacrfice and ceremony, Maharaj unleashed a WILD kirtan!  It started as a mellow kirtan as devotees circumambulated the yajna kunda but suddenly Maharaj kicked it up to a rocking tempo and led everyone in a "kirtan congo line" around the whole temple room.  The kirtan concluded with a wild tempo that had everyone dancing, Maharaj included, in absolute ecstasy.

And the Sunday Feast hadn't even begun yet!

Maharaj led the 6:00pm arati as the temple room filled to capacity and he continued with the leading of Nrsimha-Pranama (prayers to Lord Nrsimhadeva).  Setting the tone for the evening, devotees were then welcomed to ISKCON Toronto's Siva-Ratri celebrations and Maharaj settled in to give what ended up being an enthralling class!  Speaking about the glories of Lord Siva, Maharaj had the assembled devotees hanging off his every word!  This was followed by a small arati which was performed to a deity of Lord Siva.

A large group of Tamil devotees from our Toronto Hare Krishna community had sponsored the Siva-Ratri celebrations in memory of loved ones who were suffering in Sri Lanka due to the recent violence.  On that note, as a special way to help pray for peace, HH Bhaktimarga Swami then led everyone in a collective mantra meditation session which led into the 8:00pm arati.  The tone was both meditative and reflective as the meditation for peace filled the temple.

It was then HG Sri Prahlad das' turn to wield some magic on the evening!  As devotees stood to take darshan of the Deities, who were exquisitely dressed, Sri Prahlad das led an unforgettable kirtan that had the whole temple room jumping!  The kirtan continued well into the night as devotees got a chance to personally meet Indradyumna Swami.

It was a sad farewell on Monday morning as both Maharaj and Sri Prahlad das left for New York and New Jersey.  But devotees across the city certainly had blissful memories of the kirtan, prasadam, and classes dancing in their minds as they got back to their normal routines!

As a special treat, almost all the sessions that Indradyumna Swami and Sri Prahlad das conducted were broadcasted live online on this blog!  We are happy to announce that the live streaming was a grand success and devotees from all around the world logged on to watch the festivities!  Of particular note, Sunday's Siva-Ratri celebrations were watched by almost 125 viewers online!

Devotees at New Remuna Dhama, Toronto's fledgling Hare Krishna community were taken on a spiritual ride this past weekend and eagerly await HH Indradyumna Swami's next visit to Toronto!

Nityananda's Appearance Day Celebrations

This past Saturday, ISKCON Toronto, the Hare Krishna Centre, celebrated the Appearance Day of Lord Nityananda. This particular festival continues to be a favourite for local devotees and this year's festival was marked by some special features.

The program began with blissful kirtan led by Dhira Grahi das as devotees took in the sight of the beautifully dressed Deities during the 6:00pm arati . This was followed by a lecture on the glories of Lord Nityananda by HG Rupanuga Das. After the lecture devotees were treated to a mini-dramatic piece depicting the pastimes of Lord Nityananda.

The theme of this years festival was was the bhajan Nitai-Pada-Kamala which states "the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda are a shelter where one will get the soothing moonlight not only of one, but of millions of moons".

During the culmination of the dramatic piece strings of lanterns representing the millions of moons were hung across a pitch black temple room, creating a serene atmosphere as HG Ajamila das led kirtan leading into an ecstatic 8:00pm arati.

A Small Gathering Celebrates Lord Varahadeva!

Fridays are always interesting. On Fridays, while many Torontonians lurch home from a tough week at work, looking forward to weekends filled with partying, sleeping and God knows what else, devotees have a special way of spiritualizing their weekends.

Case in point, on Friday, February 6th, a small group of devotees gathered at the Hare Krishna temple to celebrate the Appearance Day of Lord Varahadeva, the boar incarnation of Lord Krishna!

As described in the Srimad Bhagavatam. Lord Krishna assumed the form of a boar to lift the drowning planet Earth from the cosmic ocean with His tusks. A demonic personality had thrown the planet earth from its orbit into this ocean but the Lord came, as a boar, and saved the Earth.

Celebrations at the temple began with a nice gathering of devotees sitting in a small group and hearing of the pastimes of Lord Krishna's boar incarnation from HG Rupanuga das. With such a small, intimate group, the class finished with a very interactive question and answer period.

Following the class, devotees got a chance to make offerings to a Deity of Lord Varahadeva as they placed candles on a special altar, made to depict Lord Varahadeva rising from the cosmic ocean (complete with an "ocean" made of blue floral gel)!

The evening wrapped up with a joyous 8:00pm arati and tasty prasadam for all! The weekend is just getting warmed up as tomorrow (Febraury 7th) we celebrate the Appearance of Lord Nityananda! See you then!

Lord Varahadeva's Appearance Day Schedule

This Friday evening, February 6th, the Hare Krishna Temple will be celebrating the appearance of Lord Varahadeva, the boar incarnation of Krishna. Srimad Bhagavatam describes the wonderful pastime when Lord Krishna once assumed the form of a splendid, gigantic boar (Varaha) and dove to the bottom of the universal ocean to gently lift up Mother Earth on His tusks to the surface.

The schedule for the evening's program is:
6:00pm to 6:30pm - Arati
6:30pm to 6:40pm - Welcome & Announcements
6:40pm to 7:05pm - Class - HG Rupanuga das
7:05pm to 7:20pm - Offerings to Lord Varahadeva
7:20pm to 8:00pm - Prasadam
8:00pm to 8:30pm - Arati

Join us as we celebrate this wonderful pastime of Lord Varahadeva, the boar incarnation of Krishna!

Cooking for Krishna - Episode Three

The ISKCON Toronto Blog is happy to present Episode Three of Cooking for Krishna. Cooking for Krishna is a regular video series which shows how to create sumptuous vegetarian items! Once made, these preparations are lovingly offered to Lord Krishna and become "prasadam", or sanctified food!

In this third episode, Rasa Krida devi dasi, a local devotee who recently returned to Toronto after being in the UK for five years, shows us how to make mouth-watering vegan brownies!

We hope you enjoy our third episode of Cooking for Krishna. Feel free to share your comments with your thoughts, feedback and suggestions for this episode! You can also re-visit Episodes 1 and 2 of Cooking for Krishna where we made Winter Soup and Spring Rolls respectively. Hare Krishna!

Three Days of Festivities this Weekend!

When it rains, it pours! After our annual Srila Prabhupada Festival on January 1st, the calendar seemed to show that we'd have to wait a few weeks before reaching in our bag of "festival-goodies" to celebrate in grand "Toronto Hare Krishna" fashion!

Well the weeks have flown by and this upcoming weekend marks some very special festivals!

This Friday evening, February 6th (6:00pm to 8:30pm), the Hare Krishna Temple will be celebrating the Appearance of the Boar Incarnation of Krishna (Lord Varahadeva). As described in the Srimad Bhagavatam, Lord Krishna once assumed the form of a splendid, gigantic boar (Varaha), dove to the bottom of the universal ocean, picked up Earth who had fallen from her orbit as a result of demonic persons, and gently carried her on His tusks to the water’s surface (learn more). Festivities will include a enthralling glimpse into this wonderful pastime of Krishna!

On Saturday morning, February 7th (4:30am to 8:30am), the Pandava Sena is inviting one and all (particularly youth) to attend the temple's daily morning program which begins at 4:30am! (more information)

On Saturday evening (6:00pm to 9:00pm), a very special festival will be taking place as we celebrate Lord Nityananda's Appearance Day! Lord Nityananda is considered identical with Balarama, the elder brother of Lord Krishna. He is regarded as being like the elder brother of Lord Chaitanya and always served Him in any way (learn more). With HH Bhaktimarga Swami in attendance, festivities will be highlighted with a "dramatic" display of Lord Nityananda's pastimes and qualities! It will surely be a festival not to be missed!

Of course, on Sunday February 8th (6:00pm to 8:30pm), we will host our weekly Sunday Feast program with the usual wonderful kirtan, the amazing vegetarian feast (prasadam) and an enlightening class!

So come spend your weekend with Toronto's Hare Krishna temple and we promise you will start next week on a spiritually heightened note!

A "Snap"-shot of Our Hare Krishna Community

At any given point in time, particularly on weekends and festivals, Toronto's Hare Krishna temple is bustling with activity and energy. A quick glimpse can give us a snapshot of what our burgeoning community is all about!

Marcus, a friendly contributer from Snap Downtown Toronto, a free monthly newspaper, recently ventured to our temple and captured a few memorable moments, including a surprise birthday party and a recent incredible theatrical production.

Snap Downtown Toronto is published and distributed through "exit news racks" at all key retail stores in the downtown core. Below you can see the heart-warming "snapped" moments (Courtesy of Snap Downtown Toronto):

A Surprise Birthday!
Happy Birthday to Taruni Toskoboynik! Held at the Krishna Temple on Avenue Road, the party was a surprise for me as well. I had a feeling to bring my camera, even though I believed I was only there to enjoy the lovely vegetarian dinner. After I introduced myself, I was taken to a room to await the birthday girl's entrance. Her surprise greeting filled the temple to overflowing with love and joy. A life full of many beautiful surprises is certainly one worth living. Thank you everyone. Gratitude all around!

Krishna Play
The drama of The 8th boy- a story about the appearance of the Shri Krishna (Supreme Personality of the Godhead. Heavens!) on the Earth about 5 million years ago. I found it to be a very colorful play that was quite enlightening, and certainly enjoyable to the hundreds that turned out to watch at the Krishna Temple on Ave. Rd. All this followed by a delicious vegetarian meal! How fabulous is that! It was such a beautiful and heartfelt presentation that it seemed more like a professional theatre performance than 'amateurs' having fun! Shows what's possible when you love what you do.
