Deity Worship Seminar - Begins April 19th, 2009

Toronto's Hare Krishna temple has an exciting seminar coming in April. The temple's Pujari Department, which manages the care of our beautiful Deities in ISKCON Toronto is welcoming all second initiated devotees to a seminar to learn about the Deity care that takes place here in Toronto.

The siminar is mandatory for all current Pujaris, and any second intitiated devotees who wish to serve on the altar in the future. At the end of the seminar devotees will recieve a certificate of completion. The seminar will begin on Sunday, April 19, 2009 from 3:30 - 4:30 pm and will continue on upcoming Sundays (the length of the seminar series has yet to be determined).
The goal of this seminar will be to begin the process of training devotees to learn the special art of taking care of our special Deities here in New Remuna Dhama. As mentioned above, a requirement for the seminar is that attendees must be second initiated.
Devotees of Krishna who commit to vows and daily meditation can take initiation from a spiritual master. Second initiation, also known as "brahmana initiation", is when the spiritual master gives sacred mantras to the disciple.

More information will be coming soon about this seminar so stay tuned. Until then, if you have questions, comments or would like to register, please email Bhakti Yoga Das.

Cooking for Krishna - Episode Four

The ISKCON Toronto Blog is happy to present Episode Four of Cooking for Krishna. Cooking for Krishna is a regular video series which shows how to create sumptuous vegetarian items! Once made, these preparations are lovingly offered to Lord Krishna and become "prasadam", or sanctified food!

In this fourth episode, Bhaktin Tara and her sister, Bhaktin Radha, two local youth who, along with their family, recently came to Toronto from Israel, show us how to make delicious and healthy vegetable cutlets!

As always, we hope you enjoy our third episode of Cooking for Krishna. Feel free to share your comments with your thoughts, feedback and suggestions for this episode! You can also re-visit Episodes 1, 2 and 3 of Cooking for Krishna where we made Winter Soup, Spring Rolls and Vegan Brownies respectively. Hare Krishna!

As a new feature, you can also download this recipe as a PDF for your convenience!

Join Us for a Harinama this Saturday!

For the second week in a row, devotees will be hitting the streets to chant, dance and blisfully sing as a means to share our jubilant spiritual tradition with the public. Known, as harinama, the outdoor chanting and dancing on the streets is sure to help usher in the warm weather of spring!

The harinama will be led by HH Bhaktimarga Swami and will feature a portable sound system!

A call goes out to one and all who would like to join the enthusiastic group of devotees who will be gathering at Kensington Park (near the happy man) at 3:30pm on Saturday, March 28, 2009.

We hope to see you there!

"Hare Krishna" for HG Brhat Mrdanga das!

As many devotees within Toronto's growing Hare Krishna community may know, the temple has regularly facilitated classes, seminars and workshops over the last several years based on books like Bhagavad-Gita, Isopanisad, Nectar of Instruction and topics like Vaisnava Etiquette and the Yoga Ladder.

All of this has been orchestrated, arranged and facilitated by HG Brhat Mrdanga das. Having founded the Bhaktivedanta College of Education and Culture in July 1991, Brhat Mrdanga das has taught the formal Bhakti-Sastri Certification Course all over the world, including Toronto!  Over the years, devotees here in New Remuna Dhama have developed a special bond built on spiritual care and guidance with Brhat Mrdanga das.

So it was with enthusiastic smiles that devotees recently learned that HG Brhat Mrdanga das has been approved for sannyasa initiation by ISKCON's Governing Body Commission (GBC)! Brhat Mrdanga das has given so much to Toronto's Hare Krishna community and so we wish him a heartfelt "Hare Krishna Congratulations"!

Stay tuned for more details!  Until then, you can read more about this wonderful news here: http://www.dandavats.com/?p=7075

Flashback Photo - 1972!

Correction: Oops! We made a mistake! This picture was actually from the original installation of Sri Sri Radha Ksira-Chora Gopinatha in 1972 (we stated earlier that this was a picture from 1976, when the Deities first came to our current temple). It makes it even more special!

As a small treat, here is a photo of our dear Deities, Sri Sri Radha Ksira-Chora Gopinatha! We'd love to see some comments and dicussion from our blog visitors about how much our beloved Deities have changed over the years! Or simply comments to let us know if you would like to see some more "flashback photos"!

Holi Celebrations Give a Feast for the Eyes!

Fresh off larger-than-life festivities for Gaura Purnima mere days before, Toronto's Hare Krishna temple held Holi celebrations on Sunday, March 15th, 2009.  A festival filled with colour and kirtan welcomed devotees as the temple filled to capacity, yet again, for another fun-filled festival.

Celebrations kicked off with the 6:00pm arati and it only took a quick glance around the temple room to sense the buzz in the air that comes during festival celebrations.  After an exuberant opening kirtan, devotees settled in for a class by HG Praharna devi dasi about the spiritual context of Holi.  Telling stories from scripture, the captive audience heard of the many wonderful pastimes associated with Holi, including the protecting of the child devotee Prahlad from the evil Holika.

After the wonderful class, the assembled devotees were treated to two classical dance numbers by local youth member, Tara.  After an introductory dance, Tara performed a number which relayed the many pastimes of Lord Krishna.  The riveted audience erupted into a huge round of applause after the performance!

As explained during the class by Praharna devi dasi, in Manipur, India on the occasion of Holi, devotees travel from home to home performing sankirtan (chanting and dancing).  With that as an inspiration, the next part of the program proved to be a real treat for devotees.  A palanquin carrying deities of Sri Sri Gaura Nitai were taken around the temple room accompanied by a soulful kirtan led by Dhira Grahi das.  The palanquin first stopped in front of Srila Prabhupada where some of our many local Prabhupada disciples offered flowers to the Deities on behalf of Srila Prabhupada.  The Deities were then carried around the temple room, stopping in front of each of the three altars.

Once the procession was completed, the focus shifted on the kirtan and, with the temple room in darkness, coloured spotlights began to flash off and on.  A fog machine was let loose to help build more atmosphere and, as the kirtan built up to a climax right before the 8:00pm arati, the lights suddenly came on and six confetti canons were set off from the balcony, filling the temple room with colour!  The evening concluded with a raucous 8:00pm arati led by Ajamila das and an incredible vegetarian feast!

During the weeks leading up to Holi celebrations, we asked that devotees not bring coloured powder to the temple as, when thrown, it makes a big mess and is difficult to clean up.  Devotees were then promised that if they left the coloured powder at home, they would get to experience a colourful festival that would do justice to Holi!  With an electric and colourful atmosphere, the smiles found on the faces of so many devotees on Sunday evening seemed to be prove that celebrations had passed that test... with flying colours, no less!

ISKCON Toronto Celebrates Gaura Purnima!

Despite falling on a Tuesday on the lunar calendar, this year's Gaura Purnima celebrations still resulted in a temple filled with devotees ready to celebrate the birth anniversary of Lord Caitanya!

Lord Caitanya is an incarnation of Krishna who appeared in Nadia, West Bengal, India in the 15th century A.D.  Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krishna Himself, appearing as His own devotee, to teach us that we can gain full enlightenment simply by chanting the holy names of the Lord.

Festivities began early in the morning at 4:30am, while most Torontonians were still asleep.  Around 50 devotees made their way to the temple for the first arati of the day.  Getting the day off to an auspicious start, the sweet sounds of kirtan and japa (mantra meditation) filled the early morning air.

Later in the morning, the assembled devotees gathered in the temple for the second arati of the day (and the first opportunity to see the Deities in their festival outfits)!  As the doors swung open, the dazzling Deities and the decorated altars were revealed much to the delight of those who were present.

After a fun-filled morning class by HH Bhaktimarga Swami, devotees scurried about the temple throughout the day as they busily prepared for the evening festivities.  Decorations went up, sound and lighting equipment were adjusted and the kitchen was humming with activity.

The evening festivities began with an arati led by HH Bhaktimarga Swami which set the tone for the evening as devotees danced about, using the space around them that would soon be gone as throngs of devotees arrived throughout the evening.

Maharaj then gave a small talk which led into a very special musical and dramatic performance.  Bhaktimarga Swami, in collaboration with Gaura-Shakti, Toronto's new kirtan yoga band, presented "Siksastakam".  The Siksastakam is comprised of eight verses written by Lord Caitanya that succinctly capture Gaudiya Vaisnava philosophy and practice.

The first part of the performance involved a musical singing of the Siksastakam by Gaura-Shakti and the second part was a dramatic telling of the translation of the beautiful verses, directed by Maharaj.  The drama had the crowd absorbed and was very well received by everyone in attendance.

The conclusion of the program was a special abhiseka (bathing ceremony) for the Deities of Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai.  Amidst a rocking kirtan by Yajna Gauranga das, the Deities were bathed in milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, and different types of water.  While being bathed, a live video of the abhiseska was displayed on a giant screen above the altar, allowing devotees to see close-ups of the Deities as they were bathed.

At the conclusion of the abisheksa, rose petals fell from the ceiling onto the altar as the kirtan reached a climax!  After the 8:00pm arati, with kirtan led by Ajamila das, a giant feast awaited the packed crowd.

Tuesday evenings are usually pretty routine for most people.  Many people come home from a hard days work and settle into a standard evening routine.  Students either come home from school or head off to evening classes.  However, at the Hare Krishna temple, every once in a while, such standard weekday evenings bring festivals that are larger than life!

Gaura Purnima Almost Here!

Gaura Purnima celebrations are less than 48 hours away and devotees at Toronto's Hare Krishna temple are preparing for an unforgettable Tuesday night festival!  HH Bhaktimarga Swami, who will be attending Gaura Purnima festivities here for the first time in many years (he is normally in India at this time of year) will be pulling a very special treat from his bag of spiritual magic tricks.

Collaborating with a recently-formed kirtan yoga band, Gaura-Shakti, Maharaj will be presenting a special dramatic version of Lord Caitanya's famous Siksastakam prayers.  Following that, devotees will witness a Maha-Abhiseka which will feature some surprises that you will not want to miss!

Holi Celebrations Next Sunday!

Next Sunday, March 15th, Toronto's Hare Krishna temple will be celebrating Holi!  Marking the time when the harvest has been completed and winter also ending, Holi is pre-eminently a festival of mirth and merriment.

Holi is also associated with the story of Holika, the sister of demon Hiranyakasipu. The demon-father, having failed in various other ways to make his son Prahlada denounce Lord Krishna, finally asked his sister Holika to take Prahlada in her lap and enter a blazing fire. Holika, who had a boon to remain unscathed by fire, did her brother's bidding. But lo, Holika's boon ended by this act of supreme sin against the Lord's devotee and was herself burnt to ashes and Prahlada came out unharmed.

Normally, Holi is associated with the throwing of powdered colours in a mood of joy and merriment.  However, while the Hare Krishna temple is always the first to promote fun and exhuberant celebrations, we humbly ask that people not bring powdered colours.  When thrown, they get into the floors and walls and cannot be removed even after thorough cleaning.

We promise if you leave the colours at home, the Hare Krishna temple will give you a spiritual festival that you will not soon forget!  More details of Holi celebrations will be posted on the blog later this week, so stay tuned!

Calling all Actors and Actresses!

As many of our regular readers and temple-goers are already aware, next Tuesday, March 10th marks the day that we celebrate the Appearance Day of Lord Caitanya, Gaura Purnima!  The evening will be marked with special festivities that will surely leave everyone on a spiritual high!

We are very excited to announce that HH Bhaktimarga Swami will be attending this year's Gaura Purnima festivities!  Normally, at this time of year, Maharaj is traveling in India for the annual GBC meetings so we don't normally have the opportunity to have Maharaj attend this grand festival.  But this year is different and the most is being made of the opportunity!

To get us even more excited, Maharaj has agreed to present a small dramatic piece based on the Siksastakam prayers of Lord Caitanya.  With that in mind, a call goes out to all aspiring actors and actresses that are interested in flexing their theatrical muscles!

If you are interested in taking part in this drama, please contact HH Bhaktimarga Swami at the temple at (416) 922-5415 or email us!  Hare Krishna!

Gaura Purnima Celebrations Next Week!

On Tuesday, March 10th, 2009, Toronto's Hare Krishna temple will be celebrating the Appearance Day of Lord Caitanya in grand fashion!  Lord Caitanya is none other than Lord Krishna Himself.

Over 500 years ago, in a special appearance, Lord Krishna personally came as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and acted as His own devotee. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krishna Himself, saturated with the love for Him that Radha embodies. As the emblem of the perfect devotee of Krishna, He displayed feelings of the highest spiritual ecstasy.

Gaura Purnima is the celebration of the appearance of Lord Caitanya and it is always one of the largest festivals at Toronto's Hare Krishna temple!  We are very excited to announce that HH Bhaktimarga Swami will be attending our celebrations and will be presenting a very special dramatic piece that is not to be missed!  There will also be a very special abhisheka that will take place that will have some surprises!

Although festivities fall on a Tuesday evening, we would like to extend a very warm invitation to you and your family to join us as we celebrate this wonderful festival!
