Deity Worship Seminar Now Open to Everyone!

ISKCON Toronto's Pujari Department began a Deity Worship Seminar on April 19th, 2009. Originally, this seminar was only for second initiated devotees. However, due to many people expressing an interest in learning more about deity worship the seminar has been opened up to everyone! This seminar is ideal for anyone who would like to learn about deity worship in the temple or would like to improve the standards of their home worship.

This Sunday, May 3rd there will be a recap session from 1:30pm - 3:30pm as well as the regular session from 3:30pm - 4:30pm. This Sunday the seminar will be held in the Dining Hall, future sessions will be relocated to the Yellow Classroom located downstairs, next to the kitchen.

For more information or if you have questions, comments or would like to register, please email Bhakti Yoga Das.

HG Bada Hari das Bringin' the House Down!

At the ISKCON Toronto Blog, we love to write about how wonderful and thumping our festivals can be at the Hare Krishna Temple, but it so much more easier to show what we mean!  This past Sunday marked Ratha-Yatra Launch Day celebrations, where we officially kicked off the countdown to our 37th Annual Festival of India (Ratha-Yatra).

We hope you enjoy this video taken from Sunday's festivities!  HG Bada Hari das led an unbelievably rocking kirtan well into the night and this video captures a small part of it at the end of the 8:00pm arati.  (Video courtesy of Tara and Radha Voskoboynik)

Oh, What a Way to Launch a Countdown!

When we think of the word "launch", perhaps the image of a space shuttle rumbling its way through the atmosphere as it carves a path to the stars comes to mind.  Necks crane upwards to watch rockets burst towards the heavens and all that is left is a trail of smoke cast across the sky.

While Toronto's Hare Krishna Temple has no intention of entering space exploration (though, the kirtans that bellow from within our walls could certainly send any heart to another world), there was a special kind of "launch" at the temple on Sunday, April 26th, 2009!  The official Festival of India (Ratha-Yatra) Launch Day was celebrated on a breezy spring evening and, yes, there was even our own version of a trail of smoke!

Kicking off with the annual Ratha-Yatra Launch Day Havan (fire sacrifice) before the scheduled Sunday Feast, special mantras were recited and auspiciousness was invoked to seek blessings from Lord Krishna for our annual Festival of India.  As the havan winded down, billows of ghee-scented smoke filled the air as the doors of the altar opened for the 6:00pm arati.

Alas, this was no normal Sunday program!  Toronto's Hare Krishna Temple was honoured to have, as a special guest, HG Bada Hari das, a world-renowned kirtaneer!  A packed temple room attentively listened to Bada Hari das as he painted a touching picture of the early beginnings of Ratha-Yatra in the West.

After the class, the Festival of India Organizing Committee took centre stage and presented the plans for this year's festival as an offering to Sri Sri Radha Ksira-Chora Gopinatha, Srila Prabhupada and the assembled devotees.  Touching on various items like the planned pre-festival party at Yonge-Dundas Square, Yoga Meltdown, a new hospitality initiative and much more, the presentation set the stage for what will surely be an exciting countdown to Ratha-Yatra on July 18-19, 2009!

And then the rockets really took off!  HG Bada Hari das eased into position behind his harmonium and led what can only be described as an electrically-explosive 8:00pm arati!!!  Walls, floors and hearts thumped with glee as a rip-roaring kirtan filled the air and devotees danced like there was no tomorrow!  The kirtan spilled well into the night and a roar of appreciation came from the assembled devotees each time there was a pause in the chanting!  The evening ended with a vegetarian feast for all and smiles were abound as hearts and tummies were left oh-so-satisfied.

We've all done it before.  At some point in time, whether in childhood or as adults, we've done the whole, "5... 4... 3... 2... 1... blast off" routine.  At Toronto's Hare Krishna temple on Sunday night, the countdown began to Toronto's biggest Hare Krishna party, the annual Festival of India!  And while the end of the countdown will certainly be a "big bang", devotees proved on Sunday night that even the beginning of a countdown can be... a blast!

An Easier Blog URL - www.torontokrishna.com

The ISKCON Toronto Blog is well into it's second year of existence and we are elated to see that the traffic to the blog has dramatically increased since those early New-Remuna-blogging days!  In an effort to continue to make it easier for devotees to visit our blog, we now have a new, easier URL: www.torontokrishna.com.  The new address simply automatically forwards to our blog, but is a lot more easier to remember than our full blog URL.

So feel free to share the new link with your family and friends.  Or if you meet someone who sounds like they might be interested in learning about the latest news and events at Toronto's vibrant Hare Krishna Temple, just tell them to visit www.torontokrishna.com!

Home Deities Gallery

For many members of our vibrant Hare Krishna community, worship of the Deity form of the Lord is not only something that happens at the temple, but also at home.

It is said that by serving the Deity of Krishna we understand ourselves to be His servant, with practical service to offer. Krishna is a person and when we care for Him, He reciprocates with us by purifying our heart and bringing us closer in our relationship with Him. Thus, many devotees choose to worship the lord in his Deity form in their homes (transforming their homes into temples)!

For some time. the ISKCON Toronto blog has featured an online gallery, , showcasing our community's "Home Deities"! This is an excellent opportunity to have virtual darshan of the various beautiful Deities being worshiped throughout our community.

If you would like us to include your deity pictures in the gallery please email a picture to us!

A Friday Night Celebrating Lord Rama!

It was an overcast, wet and soggy evening that threatened to "dampen" Rama Navami celebrations at Toronto's Hare Krishna temple. As the rain drizzled across the city, one could just imagine devotees deciding to stay home, perhaps crawling under blankets and maybe throwing in DVDs of the "Ramayana" as their way of celebrating Rama Navami. At least that way, they would stay dry!

Alas, there is something about a festival at New Remuna Dhama that will always bring a crowd, no matter what! Devotees in Toronto are used to tolerating the many challenges sent forth by Mother Nature and so, while they might straggle in a bit late, one can be assured that once a festival gets rolling, the warm, smiling faces of devotees will fill the temple and beat out any bad-weather-blues!

So, while yucky weather certainly brought scowls to the faces of many across Toronto, it simply provided a wonderful contrast for the colourful celebrations at the temple which took place in honour of the appearance of Lord Ramacandra!

Millions of years ago, in the age called Treta-yuga, the Supreme Personality of Godhead descended as a king, Lord Rama, or Ramacandra, to establish the principles of religion, morality and righteousness. In an epic victory of good over evil, Lord Rama, the pious King of the world, defeated the wicked Ravana in the great battle of Lanka.

Before the evening festival on Friday, a 24-hour reading of the Ramayana had taken place, starting the day before. The reading wrapped up just as the Friday evening celebrations began.

Festivities kicked off with an energetic arati led by HH Bhaktimarga Swami. Maharaj then gave a class where he eloquently spoke of the qualities and nature of Lord Rama. As devotees allowed their minds to swim in the ocean of Lord Rama's unlimited attributes, the program continued with a guided kirtan meditation (nama-yajna).

Gathering around a beautifully decorated altar in the middle of the temple room, the assembled devotees first entered the guided meditation by collectively chanting the maha-mantra along with an audio track of Srila Prabhupada. Once the mood was set, the nama-yajna began and the kirtan took over. After a goosebump-inducing kirtan, an arati to Lord Rama was performed, leading into the 8:00pm arati as the altar doors swung open. A vegetarian feast awaited devotees at the end of the program and smiles were abound while rain puddles swelled outside.

Chanting, dancing and feasting. These are the three elements that are staples of a Hare Krishna festival. Like the basic required ingredients of even the most complex of recipes, these three things can always be found when devotees assemble to celebrate. Friday evening's "spiritual-recipe" featured one extra tantalizingly delightful ingredient: the sweet taste of the glorification of Lord Rama!

Rama Navami Celebrations this Friday!

This Friday, April 3, 2009, Toronto's Hare Krishna temple will be celebrating Rama Navami, the appearance of Lord Ramacandra. In an epic victory of good over evil, Lord Rama, the pious King of the world and incarnation of Lord Krishna, defeated the wicked Ravana in the great battle of Lanka.

The epic Ramayana tells the story of Lord Rama. The reading will begin at 5:00pm on Thursday, April 2nd and conclude at 5:00pm on Friday, April 3rd. This will be followed by the main celebrations at 6:00pm!

Meet ISKCON Toronto's New Pet Monkey!!!

Toronto's Hare Krishna temple is excited to announce that we will be welcoming a new little creature to our New Remuna Dhama family.  A few months ago, the temple filed some papers to request permission to acquire a pet monkey from South America.

We learned this week that the City of Toronto's Animal Services Division has approved the paperwork and the pet monkey will be arriving this week.  We were even sent a picture of him from the animal hospice in South America where he will be coming from!

Currently named Hasya, our new pet monkey will be re-named "Hanumana" during a special ceremony when he arrives which will be JUST in time for Rama Navami celebrations on Friday.

For all those who thought spiritualists don't have a sense of humour, the ISKCON Toronto Blog would like wish you a Happy April Fool's Day!  Sorry, there is no monkey coming to our temple! :o)
