Snana-Yatra Celebrations this Sunday!

A sure sign that the annual Festival of India (Ratha-Yatra) is just around the corner is the annual Snana-Yatra festival! This upcoming Sunday, Toronto's Hare Krishna temple will be celebrating this wonderful festival, wherein Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balarama and Lady Subhadra will be bathed amidst amazing kirtan and chanting!

After the bathing ceremony (snana-yatra), Lord Jagannātha apparently becomes sick. He is therefore removed to His private quarters, where no one can see Him. Actually, during this period renovations are made on the body of the Jagannātha Deity. This is called nava-yauvana.

During the Ratha-yātrā ceremony, Lord Jagannātha once again comes before the public. Thus for thirteen days after the bathing ceremony, Lord Jagannātha is not visible to any visitors!

A warm invitation goes out to you and your family to join in the wonderful Snana-Yatra festival this upcoming Sunday! Don't miss out this last opportunity to see Lord Jagannatha before his grand Ratha-Yatra festival!

The festival schedule is as follows (subject to change):
6:00pm to 6:30pm - Arati
6:30pm to 6:40pm - Welcome & Announcements
6:40pm to 7:00pm - Presentation
7:00pm to 8:00pm - Bathing Ceremony
8:00pm to 8:30pm - Arati
8:30pm to 9:30pm - Prasadam

Experience the Bliss-Sankitan Saturday on June 27, 2009

We would like to officially invite you to the first ever Greater Toronto Area Monthly Sankirtan Festival (GTA-MSF). The inspiration behind this initiative is HG Vaisesika das who took Toronto by storm a few weeks back with his wonderful kirtan, soul-stirring lectures and practical seminar on sankirtan.

Sankirtan is a Sanskrit term which means the congregational chanting and sharing of the names and glories of Krishna, which is the reccomended process for spiritual success. In the Hare Krishna tradition, sankirtan is associated with sharing our spiritual culture with the public via the timeless books, translated by Srila Prabhupada.

We know that some of you regretfully were not able to make it out for the seminar and/or get to hit the streets when HG Vaisesika das was here, but regret no further! On Saturday June 27, 2009 you’ll get another opportunity to experience the bliss yourself! Part of the MSF initiative is to bring everyone together, and so in that spirit the MSF will begin with the morning program at the Toronto Hare Krishna temple at 4:30am on June 27, 2009. The program will include a morning worship ceremony, some time for mantra mediation and will include a discourse that will discuss the benefits of sankirtan. A short seminar on the practicalities of how to distribute books will follow, and by 11am we should hit the streets and stay out until 2pm.
Being part of the MSF is not simply restricted to coming out on book distribution. There are various avenues where you can help contribute to make this event a success! Whether it be helping to prepare prasadam (sanctified vegetarian food), spreading the word about the event, helping out with logistics, being part of the harinama team (who will sing the Lord's names) or just being a friendly face who wants to watch everyone else, we encourage everyone to please come out!

Please sign up on the form below and don't hesitate to contact us with any comments or questions at toronto.sankirtan@gmail.com.

Festival of India Advert - The Toronto Tunnel!

Toronto's Hare Krishna Temple would like to extend a warm invitation to devotees around the world to experience our 37th Annual Festival of India (Ratha-Yatra) on July 18-19, 2009!

The weekend festivities kick off with the famous Ratha-Yatra parade beginning at Yonge and Bloor on July 18th at 11am. The parade features three beautifully decorated chariots making their way down world-famous Yonge Street amidst ecstatic kirtan!

The highlight (and most unique part of Toronto's parade) is when the kirtan reaches its pinnacle in the "Toronto Tunnel". Chaos ensues as the parade cruises under a highway overpass and the resulting acoustics cause the sound levels to go through the roof! Theres nothing else like it imagine a sea of devotees jumping, dancing and singing to the pulsating beat of mrdangas and karatalas while their voices echo in the famous Toronto Tunnel! It is definitely not to be missed!

This video is an advertisement created for an internal ISKCON audience, promoting the kirtan explosion that takes place in the "Toronto Tunnel".

You can learn more about the Toronto Tunnel by visiting www.torontotunnel.com.

Let's Head Outside - Postering This Sunday!

This Sunday, "Lord Baladeva's Postering Crew" will be hitting the streets yet again! Last Sunday, an enthusiastic group of volunteers worked together to put up close to 450 posters in high traffic areas of the city! This effort will continue every Sunday at 1:00pm, between now and Ratha-Yatra, volunteers will meet at 1:00pm and hit the streets armed with tape, staple guns and posters!

Postering is one of our most extensive and important tasks as we need to constantly keep the public informed of the festival and one of the best ways is to hit the streets and put up our beauitful posters!

Volunteers will meet at the Hare Krishna Temple (243 Avenue Rd.) at 1:00pm. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for walking. As a special surprise is that there are always scrumptious snacks and refreshments waiting for everyone once we are finished our "postering missions"! Panihati Festival Comes to Toronto!

This past Sunday, Toronto's Hare Krishna temple celebrated the Panihati Festival for the very first time! The Panihati festival holds unique significance in our Hare Krishna tradition. The origination of the Panihati festival is beautiful and is deep with rich meaning and significance.

Over 500 years ago, when Lord Nityananda first returned to Bengal, after spreading the sankirtan movement (the philosophy of jubilantly chanting the Lord's names) throughout the land, He began His mission in Panihati, a village four miles north of Calcutta. For almost five months, He preached and gathered followers in this area, until thousands chanted and danced in ecstasy under His able supervision.

It was at this time that Raghunatha dasa Goswami, then a young boy, approached Nityananda Prabhu as a surrendered servant. Since Raghunatha was born into a wealthy family, Nitai asked him to hold a huge festival in which all the devotees could have as much yogurt and chipped rice as they desired. The festival at Panihati was a grand success, drawing pilgrims from miles around to participate in various ways. This naturally enhanced the sankirtana movement and pleased Nityananda very much.

So it was in this mood that preparations began at Toronto's Hare Krishna temple for our inaugural Panihati celebrations. It all began in our bustling temple kitchen as chipped rice was purchased and lots of yogurt was lovingly made! Fruits and sweets were added and the mood of Panihati began to fill the air.

Meanwhile, upstairs in the temple room, festivities kicked off with a heart-warming concert by HG Atmarama das. The entire temple room was filled with the incredible and beautiful Siksastakam prayers, or “Eight Instructions”, a concise course in attaining spiritual perfection, composed by Lord Caitanya Himself! Atmarama das then continued right through the first arati of the evening and had everyone dancing in jubilance!

Before the class, a special moment was taken to ceremonially welcome the special guests and saintly persons who were present at Toronto's inaugural Panihati festival. Special garlands, which were placed at the feet of our Deities, Sri Sri Radha Ksira-Chora Gopinatha, were offered to HH Bhaktimarga Swami, HG Kratu das, HG Brhat Mrdanga das and HG Atmarama das.

Bhaktimarga Swami then read from the Caitanya Caritamrta, relating the pastimes that took place at Panihati over 500 years ago! This lead to an enamouring dramatic production entitled, "The Witness" which had a packed temple room enraptured!

The festival wrapped up with an incredible final kirtan by Atmarama das that had everyone dancing and chanting, creating a palpable spiritual atmosphere! As the kirtan winded down, a huge feast was served to all and while plates were filled with many delictable items, the chipped rice and yogurt especially filled many hearts!

Nirjala Ekadasi Chat - A Relative Success!

Many Hare Krishna devotees in Toronto observed Nirjala Ekadasi on Wednesday, June 3rd!  This meant fasting from all food, including even water!  To help devotees stay encouraged in their day-long fasting, the ISKCON Toronto blog had a live chat window up and running all day so that devotees could chat with each other and spiritually encourage each other during their fasts.

The chat room wasn't exactly set ablaze with amazing discussions, but it still proved to be a nice way for devotees to stay in touch with each other over the course of the special Ekadasi.  We are also very happy to announce that almost 200 people logged on to our blog just yesterday alone!!!

Based on the relative success, we may decide to have another chat session on the next special occasion!  We would love to hear comments with your thoughts and feedback!

Tomorrow is Nirjala Ekadasi! Let's Chat!

Devout followers of the Hare Krishna tradition are used to the idea of enthusiastically celebrating their spirituality through chanting, dancing and feasting!  The feasting is such an important part of our tradition, that we have become known as the "kitchen religion"!

Now every fortnight, we observe Ekadasi, a day of prayer and meditation. On this day we fast (or simplify our meals and abstain from grains and beans), and spend extra time reading the scriptures and chanting the auspicious Hare Krishna mantra.

Once a year, we honour Pandava-Nirjala Ekadasi wherein, on this auspicious day, devotees do a complete fast from all food, even from water!  Tomorrow is Pandava-Nirjala Ekadasi - stomachs beware!!!

To help encourage many of our ISKCON Toronto Blog followers during their Nirjala Ekadasi fast, we will be posting a chat window tomorrow so that devotees can stay in touch with each other and encourage each other as we observe this day of complete fast!

The chat window will be launched at 12:00am EST!

A "Booked" Weekend with Vaisesika das!

In the weeks leading up to the visit of HG Vaisesika das to Toronto's vibrant Hare Krishna temple, excitement began to build about finally bursting beyond the doors of our comfortable home at 243 Avenue Road and hitting the streets to share Krishna Consciousness, our spiritual culture, through sankirtan.

Sankirtan, known as "book distribution", is one of the original cornerstones of the modern Hare Krishna tradition.  Many people associate the early days of the Hare Krishna movement with the presence of bright-eyed monks on the streets of major urban centres in the 1960's and 70's as they shared the ancient wisdom of our tradition with anyone and everyone through our spiritual books!  The streets of Toronto were no different back then but, oh my, how times change.

With a huge community, grand festivals and outreach programs in mainstream venues, one could have argued that Toronto's Hare Krishnas had perhaps forgotten the art of sharing our books right on the streets, with anyone willing to listen!

Then along came HG Vaisesika das, a personified "spiritual sonic boom", who won the hearts of local devotees with his enthralling words, ecstatic kirtans and uncanny ability to instill confidence in the most timid of devotees.  Presenting a "Sankirtan Orientation Seminar", Vaisesika das opened up the weekend by giving a theoretical presentation on the art of sankirtan.  Almost 50 devotees turned up on the seasonable Friday night and they hung off Vaisesika das' every word.

As a special feature, the seminar was broadcasted live and devotees from as far away as Halifax, Montreal and Winnipeg tuned in to watch (seminar broadcast recording available here).

A good night's sleep on Friday night prepared a charged-up group of devotees for a full Saturday!  Vaisesika das opened the day with an inspiring class on Srimad Bhagavatam and then, after a delightful breakfast, took theory and turned it to practice as he guided over 30 devotees in practice sessions about how to share books with the people of Toronto.

The electric enthusiasm in the air had the temple bursting at the seams and the devotees hit the streets with Vaisesika das leading the way.  A few hours later and almost 130 books had been sold to people walking about the streets of the bustling downtown core.

Of course, it wouldn't be a "booked" weekend if there wasn't a grand Sunday Feast!  Giving a class on the glories of the Bhagavad Gita, Vaisesika das had a packed temple room riveted with his every word.  Less than an hour later, he had the same temple room going absolutely crazy in a wild and rocking kirtan that spilled well into the night!  The evening didn't seem to want to end and devotees just didn't want to go home.

Yes, it was simply that kind of weekend!

The books that Srila Prabhupada gave us are the bedrock on which our Hare Krishna movements sits atop.  In a packed and exciting weekend, HG Vaisesika das reminded us of the importance of enthusiastically sharing this knowledge with the world and thus helping to introduce Krishna Consciousness to so many people.

Like an amazing book that you wish will never end, this past weekend at ISKCON Toronto was filled with knowledge, laughter and excitement.  Alas, the weekend came to a close and we wished Vaisesika das a fond farewell.  However, we've simply placed a bookmark on this page and eagerly await Vaisesika das' next visit so that we can pick up right where we left off - with "booked", inspiring weekends!
